Sometimes we just need a break

by Ray Chen in

This is how Yilin and I sometimes wish we can spend our time. Just hanging out and relaxing, while Noah just chills and entertains himself. This become especially desirable on days when Noah just doesn't want to nap for more than 15-20 minutes.

Today, I took advantage of an overactive Noah and combined it with a little photography fun. This wasn't the picture that I had initially imagined, but I'm happy with the way it turned out. Here's what I did.

First, I prepped the scene while Noah was taking one of his short little naps. This meant cleaning up the family room a little to make space for the shoot. My original idea was to photograph Noah in one of the cubbies in our coffee table.

Look at how clean it is! We had to scratch this idea because it was immediately obvious that Noah wouldn't fit and, if he did, it probably wouldn't be all that safe.

So we replaced the coffee table with the bouncer and Noah was immediately all smiles.

Then Yilin and I positioned ourselves and set the camera on a self-timer.

A little photoshop and we get a smiling Noah with a couple of relaxing parents.

Here's how I lit the scene. I used a huge soft light from the camera right. It's one of my favorite things about our apartment, the big windows let it so much light and since we're southern facing, it's a pretty soft light.

I then filled the opposite side with the flash set at 1/16 and shot through a reflector. This setup allowed me to light Noah and give him a little more emphasis without lighting too much of the background.

Also, the March pictures are complete and ready for viewing.
